Abstract
In this study, uniaxial compression tests were performed on basalt samples with artificial cracks with different numbers and angles using an intelligent loading device and also through numerical modeling. The results show that the uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and axial strain in samples with artificial cracks are lower than in pristine samples and the extent of this reduction depends on the geometry of the artificial crack. The way the cracks connect in the samples was also studied and the types of cracks that spread from the tips of the artificial cracks in the samples were described. The formation of types of tensile, shear, and tensile-shear cracks and the way the artificial cracks connect depends on the geometry of the artificial crack and using it, the failure mode and the process of crack formation in these samples are studied. Also, the effect of crack connection on the strength and fracture behavior of basalt samples under uniaxial compression is investigated. This study of the mechanical behavior of cracks with different numbers and angles provides a greater understanding of the concepts of rock failure under uniaxial compression.
