Abstract
In mechanized drilling machines, cutting tools play a major role in digging the ground and are in direct contact with the excavated materials, which causes their wear and corrosion. On the other hand, the ability to predict tool wear in mechanized tunneling with soft ground TBMs has a direct impact on improving the schedule and estimating the implementation costs of projects. However, the lack of a comprehensive accepted standard or test for determining the abrasion of soils in geotechnical investigations has made the prediction of tool wear very difficult. Therefore, in this article, a variety of methods for assessing soil abrasion are reviewed and their effectiveness in estimating the abrasion rate is investigated. In this study, in each test, the characteristics of the section exposed to abrasion, the similarities of the loading geometry and movement mechanisms, and the characteristics of the section causing abrasion, the effect of the mineralogical composition, grain size and shape, and density of the soil sample have been compared with the situation that occurs during mechanized excavation of soil by the cutting tool of a TBM. Finally, despite significant shortcomings in the methods for evaluating the abrasion of soft soils, the Soft Ground Abrasion Tester (SGAT) and the Penn State Soil Abrasion Test (PENN STATE) can be used as the most appropriate and efficient methods.
