Abstract
Granular materials have discontinuities and microcracks in their structure due to the weight of the upper layers, stresses caused by temperature changes in the environment, and seismic forces. On the other hand, natural granular materials have a variety of shapes and sizes, and these factors also affect the mechanical behavior of the materials. By preparing granular materials of the same shape, size, but with cracks, the effect of cracks on their behavior can be evaluated. Accordingly, artificial rounded-corner cracked and uncracked aggregates in the smaller size range of materials used in gravel dams were manufactured and subjected to uniaxial compressive loading with lateral confinement. Controlling parameters such as failure factor, applied energy per unit volume, compressibility, and stress-strain behavior for all tests were obtained and compared with each other. The results showed that the presence of discontinuities in the grains causes more failure and more energy absorption. The dominant failure pattern in the materials was obtained using the Weibull distribution function as surface crushing and lip filling. Also, the slope of the stress-strain curve in cracked grains decreased compared to uncracked grains, but in all different loading conditions, the tangential elastic modulus increased. Finally, the trend of changes in the failure factor against the input energy can be approximated as a hyperbolic function.
