The existing statistics on the failure of embankment dams worldwide emphasize the importance of regular control over the behavior of such dams in order to assess the safety and stability of their different zones, both during the construction phase and during operation. The occurrence of arching and reduction in stress levels within the core of embankment dams is one of the factors that can lead to the initiation and development of cracks and pose a risk to the stability of the dam. In analysis of the state of stress distribution in embankment dams located in narrow valleys due to the three-dimensional effect (longitudinal and transverse) of stress arching within the core, two-dimensional models cannot obtain correct results, and this work is only possible with three-dimensional modeling. This research was conducted with the aim of determining the stress arching pattern within the clay core of embankment dams located in narrow valleys using a three-dimensional model and determining the zones prone to fracture according to the existing stress distribution, specifically, the data of the Lorestan Roodbar Dam was used and the mentioned objectives were determined precisely for this dam.<br>In this study, at first the three-dimensional modelling of the Lorestan Roodbar rock-fill dam, located in a narrow valley, was carried out using PLAXIS 3D V.22 software. Then, the intensity of arching phenomenon within the core was investigated at the end of construction and initial impounding stages. The maximum amount of arching was observed to occur at one fifth of the dam's height above the core base at the end of construction, and the intensity of arching increased after one year of dam impounding. In addition, the condition of the core in terms of tensile zones and, consequently, the potential for crack development and fracture at the end of construction was investigated. The dimensions of the expansion of these zones were determined, and indicated the presence of tensile zones in the upper elevations, around fifty meters from the crest, and near the abutments.

Slope stabilization is a critical challenge in geotechnical engineering. In recent years, innovative techniques, such as pile installation, have been proposed to address this issue. This study presents a novel analytical method that accounts for the stress arching phenomenon along the height of the sliding layer between two lateral piles. First, the vertical cross-sectional stress distribution behind the piles was analyzed in a two-dimensional soil model, incorporating stress arching effects within the sliding layer. Subsequently, the plastic deformation theory was employed to calculate the lateral forces acting on the piles. Finally, the proposed analytical method was validated through comparisons with laboratory test results and existing analytical approaches. The results revealed that the lateral force on the pile decreases after reaching its maximum value near the sliding surface, exhibiting a nonlinear distribution along the pile depth. The proposed analytical method demonstrates promising accuracy in predicting lateral forces on stabilizing piles, offering a reliable tool for practical geotechnical applications.

This study aims to develop accurate data-driven models for predicting the maximum ground surface subsidence (Smax) induced by longwall coal mining, one of the key challenges in mining engineering. Accurate prediction of Smax is crucial for minimizing damage to surface and subsurface structures and enhancing operational safety. A total of 46 datasets from literature, involving three influential parameters including coal seam thickness (hs), depth of cover (H), and panel width (Lw), were collected. Two predictive models were developed: a support vector regression (SVR) model optimized using the Golden Eagle Optimization (GEO) algorithm (SVR-GEO), and a nonlinear multivariate regression model (NLMR). The generalization ability of SVR-GEO was validated using 5-fold cross-validation. Models’ performance in both training and testing phases was evaluated using Taylor diagrams, regression error characteristic (REC) curves, and six statistical indices (R², VAF, a20, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE), and compared against six empirical equations. Results showed that SVR-GEO outperformed both NLMR and empirical models, achieving R² values of 0.988 (training) and 0.942 (testing). Sensitivity analysis revealed that coal seam thickness (hs) had the greatest impact on Smax, followed by panel width (LW) and depth of cover (H). The SVR-GEO model is proposed as a robust and reliable tool for predicting Smax in longwall mining projects.

Accurate prediction of fluid transport through fractured rocks is critical for groundwater management, hydrocarbon recovery, geothermal energy extraction, and subsurface waste isolation. Classical cubic‑law formulations fail when aperture variability and surface asperities dominate flow resistance, necessitating full Navier–Stokes modelling. Such models, however, require high‑quality experimental data for calibration and validation. Conventional casting or engraving cannot reproduce field‑scale roughness repeatably. This research addresses these challenges by combining precise additive manufacturing of fracture geometries with a pressure‑controlled permeameter, delivering reproducible datasets for numerical verification and future parametric studies. Surface topographies representing JRC 0, 10 and 20 were generated in CAD, respecting a 54 mm diameter and 110 mm length to fit a Hoek triaxial cell. The halves were printed from rigid photopolymer, sealed, water‑saturated, and assembled. A perforated 3D‑printed distributor ensured uniform inflow. Upstream head levels produced inlet pressures of 195, 293, 391 and 489 Pa; lateral confinement of 1–2 bar prevented side leakage. Outflow was weighed at one‑minute intervals until steady conditions were reached. Numerical meshes employed hexahedral elements refined near asperities. Incompressible, laminar Navier–Stokes equations were solved with a coupled pressure–velocity algorithm; convergence was accepted at residuals <10⁻⁶. Discharge increased linearly with inlet pressure for every roughness, yet absolute flow rates decreased as JRC rose. At 195 Pa, measured flow declined from 538 mL min⁻¹ (JRC 0) to 431 mL min⁻¹ (JRC 20); simulations predicted 524 mL min⁻¹ and 419 mL min⁻¹ respectively. Maximum deviation across all cases was 4.8 %, attributable to minor printing tolerances and sensor resolution. The validated CFD model accurately captures roughness‑controlled head losses and is extensible to intersecting fractures, non‑Darcy regimes, and thermo‑hydraulic coupling. Practically, the combined laboratory–numerical platform offers a dependable means for parameterizing permeability in fractured reservoirs and for benchmarking up‑scaled network models.

In many previous studies on the nondestructive evaluation of cementitious materials, the primary focus has been on measuring ultrasonic pulse velocity, while signal analysis has largely remained qualitative or generalized. However, quantitative analysis of ultrasonic signal energy within specific frequency bands using wavelet-based techniques represents a research gap. This study explores the application of ultrasonic nondestructive testing for detecting defects and discontinuities in cement mortar samples with varying mix designs. Mortar samples with different cement contents (CC) were analyzed to investigate the relationship between material composition, wave velocity, and transit time. Ultrasonic signals were processed using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT) to assess energy distribution across targeted frequency bands. Results revealed that the relative energy in the healthy frequency range was 95.5% in intact samples and 80.55% in damaged samples, while the energy in the damaged frequency band increased from 2.42% to approximately 11.26%. Additionally, increasing the cement content by about 20% improved the homogeneity of the samples, as the ultrasonic pulse velocity rose from 4007.62 m/s in the CC10 sample to 9768.5 m/s in the CC20 sample. The novelty of this research lies in integrating ultrasonic testing with wavelet-based energy analysis in specific frequency bands and quantitatively evaluating the impact of cement percentage on damage detection accuracy. This approach enables precise identification of damage even in low-strength samples. The study underscores the potential of signal processing techniques for effective defect detection and material homogeneity assessment in cement mortar samples with variable cement content.

Underground pipelines serve as essential infrastructure for transporting water, gas, and wastewater in both urban and rural environments. As these pipelines age, rehabilitation and replacement become increasingly necessary. Pipe bursting has emerged as an effective trenchless technology for pipeline renewal, offering advantages such as reduced costs, minimal surface disruption, and enhanced safety. This study investigates the effects of pipe bursting operations on adjacent underground facilities and ground surface deformations using a three-dimensional numerical model developed in ABAQUS and validated against experimental data. The analysis examines longitudinal strains, vertical deformations, and ground movement patterns during the bursting process. The results show that maximum strains occur in adjacent pipes when the expander is in close proximity, while ground deformations transition from symmetrical to asymmetrical as the expander advances. Additionally, as the depth of buried pipes decreases, larger surface deformations occur. The findings demonstrate that numerical modeling provides an effective approach for predicting soil-structure interactions in pipe bursting projects, offering valuable insights for urban infrastructure planning and risk mitigation.
